is it possible?
      #379501 - Fri Jan 11 2008 09:41 PM

i have a netgear wgr614 wireless router set up downstairs (work pc - hard wired)i have a pc upstairs in main bedroom (wireless network pci card) i have been useing this setup for a couple of months now with no problems at all. now is it possible to attach my daughters laptop to my wireless pc, if possible i want to hard wire them as the cables are already in place from my old virgin/ntl setup. or will i have to buy a wireless usb dongle.

how would i go about it? do i just plug in the eathernet cable or i also have a little wired router that i used?

any ideas?

thanks in advance,

You can hardwire it, no problem. Just plug the ethernet cable into a spare port on the router and the laptop and that's more or less it, unless you were using a USB modem or dial-up on the laptop. If you were, delete all connections in Tools > Internet Option> Connections tab, then follow the prompts from the setup button on the same page.

thanks for the reply richiep, the wiring i have in place at the moment is running from my wireless connected pc in the master bedroom going into my daughters bedroom. is it possible to connect the laptop in my daughters room to my pc in the master bedroom? rather than having to dig out the cable and re-route it from the router downstairs to my daughters room?

thanks,

If it's a wireless router and a wireless laptop, why not do it that way?

If you have an old wired router, you may be able to connect that up and use it as a switch. However, it may be a bit tricky to set up, or it may work straight away. Connect both to the ethernet ports, not the LAN port.

If it doesn't, you may need to get a USB adapter, although these are more robust and use less system resources.
