Ok,
I've been running Tiscali broadband with a Thomson ST 330 USB modem for donkeys and connecting at around 2MB. I decided it was time to go wireless so I called Tiscali and got a Thomson ST 585v6 router. I haven't got the wireless cards for the computers yet so I wired it in on just the one PC using the ethernet cable. Everything works but now I can only connect at less then 500KBs? I have no experience with routers so just wondered if anyone had any ideas?
Cheers forum.

If it’s present, the third-party firewall is the likely culprit or perhaps your neighbours are taking advantage of an unsecured wireless network. I suppose the router could be faulty.
Incidentally, I only use the router firewall together with the Windows one.
Experiment with the firewall off and set up the wireless security.

Hi Burr.
Thanks for your input.
The only firwall I use is ZoneAlarm Free version. I'm not sure how to change anything on the router itself as is just came with a Tiscali disk but no other instructions. I've read about an IP address for the router but I don't know what that is or how to find it? When I set it up with the cable all I got was Network name: SpeedTouchxxxxxx and a password but I don't know what this means?
Sorry I hate sounding completely rubbish but as I've never used one I have no idea what I'm doing. I've gone back to the old 330 for now.

To access the router you type 192.168.n.n into the address bar of a browser window. The n is specific to the router and/or the ISP. You also have to supply a user name and password, admin and admin are the most widely used. It will all be in your documentation somewhere or Google for it.
As you’re completely new to wireless look for references to your ISP and router for hints on setting up wi-fi.
The SpeedTouchxxxxxx and password are probably the SSID and it's security key.
Good luck, it's easy.

Thanks Burr,
I'll have another play around and see what I can find.

Burr,
I managed to find out how to get the browser page for my router and with the Router firewall disabled it shows:
Link Information Uptime: 0 days, 0:10:39 Modulation: G.992.1 annex A Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 288 / 2,304 Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 1.15 / 4.81 However, if I run a speed test at speedtest.net I still only get 531KBS am I doing something wrong?

Don't disable the router firewall, I meant your software one!
The 2304Kbps is the theoretical maximum speed of downloading. You may find this varies from time to time. Some routers take a little while to settle down to a consistent speed.
Also the MTU may need altering, have a look here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/MTU.htm

Burr,
Once again you come to a users rescue. I changed my MTU to 1458 and my speed is back.
Thank you very much, I have a lot to learn about my new toy, but I'm excited about setting up my wireless network!
