I have three pc's in the house which all connect to our wireless ADSL Sparkcom router. The downstairs pc is connected via a cable to the router. My son's applemac is wireless enabled and works fine.
My daughters pc uses a usb dongle to connect together with LAN software. This connection is very poor and it loses the connection or is extremely slow most of the time. I've used her pc downstairs in place of mine and it works fine. I've also used my laptop in her room and connected to the internet fine.
The only way to get the connection to work if it drops is to switch the router off and on again or restart her pc.
What can I do to improve the connection. Is it worthwhile inserting a PCI (?) card or is it a case of updating drivers, buying a new dongle or doing something within windows xp to improve the connection.
If you have the option of converting to ethernet via a NIC in your daughters PC then do so. USB is not and never was designed for networking. It's slow, uses a huge amount of processor power and is very unreliable. Here's a good NIC for her PC.

Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.
Hi Thanks for the reply. This product looks the bees knees but can you recommend one of these that doesn't need a ethernet cable ie a wireless option Thanks Clementst
You could try this one. I should add that any links I might give for hardware aren't recommendations in the sense that I've bought and tried the product. The link is to a retailer who I trust and use regularly and for a product that has at least a 4 star average rating from other users.
