I have a main computer upstairs and a laptop I use downstairs. I am looking at getting broadband but was not sure how to connect the computers. I want cable rater than wireless as I read in Webuser this week that this would be faster. The main incoming BT point in downstairs and I have 3 telephones connected to this (2 upstairs). Can I connect the modem to the telephone point upstairs or does it need to be the main point? Do I then connect a router to the modem and both computers to the router ? If so can anyone suggest model for a low cost set-up ? Would std ethernet cables be OK or do you something special ?

If you're getting broadband over a BT line, you're likely to need a modem/router, unless you get an ethernet modem.
You can try connecting it to the extension, but they don't always work so you may need to use the master socket if it doesn't.
Standard ethernet cables will work fine.
