Trying to install a webcam.
      #379143 - Wed Jan 09 2008 03:18 PM

Hi
I am trying to install a cheap and cheerful Webcam from tescos but the driver will not install from the software cd. The installshield wizard starts up but after about 20 seconds it disappears (minimises to the taskbar) but then nothing else happens! I cant restore the wizard from the taskbar and neither can I close it. When i bring up the task manager it shows as "running" so i can cancel it from there but trying to reinstall the driver brings an identical result. Have tried downloading the driver but again it will not install.

I have been happily installing things for years and this is the first time this has happened to me so not being very tech savvy i have no idea what to do next. If anyone can advise it will be much appreciated. I am running windows xp SP2 and the webcam is a "techweb 1". Cheers.

Yes thats right. Download the driver, unzip it and the installwizard starts, gets to "removing back up files" (or similar) then minimises to the taskbar never to surface again! Can only stop it "running" by using the task manager. Any idea whats going on? Cheers.

Not sure if this is an installshield error or a software one ( the driver itself ) Can you be a bit more precise , is there no error number for example?

Seen a couple of other threads on the net with the same problem , unsolved

Have you tried emptying your temp files before installing......often files are written to the temp directory during installations and if there's not enough room the install may fail.

The last time i tried to install got the error message 1628: Failed to complete installation. I googled this and its pretty much a general message but have tried all the possible "fixes" on the Installshield Consumer Central website with no success.

Have noticed that in my list of programmes i have got two new programmes 1 named PC Camera and the other bizarrely named PC Camer@! Neither will open of course and trying to uninstall them brings up the wizard for about one second which then disappears never to be seen again. The programmes don't uninstall.

It seems to my untrained eye that it must be an installshield error but as far as i can see you cant simply download another copy of this to overide the faulty one. Or can you? Shall i try and install an old programme that i know installed ok previously or will this cause me more problems in the long run.

Any further help/suggestions much appreciated.

Hope you dont mind me butting in.
I have one of these cheap and cheerful web cams on this machine and it loaded OK for me and works perfectly.
On my programs it shows up as PC Camera@! and on the desktop as AMCAP.
Just a thought but the software that came with it may be faulty.
Why not take it back to Tescos and ask for a replacement.

Hello again . Many thanks for the advice. I actually tried to install the webcam on my laptop and had exactly the same problem. It seems most likely therefore that there is a problem with the software so will take it back to tescos this afternoon and perhaps try their slightly more expensive webcam to see if that works.
I had been thinking also that my problem may have been caused by a registry cleaner software download which i foolisly purchased called Regcure. As i downloaded this shortly after first trying to install the webcam it may not be connected but anyone reading this be warned! It seems that Regcure is a scam and is far more likely to cause problems with your PC rather than cure them. I have had numerous problems since running this software and am now in email contact to try and get my money back under their 60 day no quibble guarantee.

After a bit of Google research ( which i wish i had done before buying! )it seems highly unlikely that i will get anywhere but as the saying goes theres no fool like an old fool.......

If that's the case I would also suggest getting a HijackThis log looked at while you're here. You can do that in this forum. be sure to read the topics at the top first though

Registry cleaners and other little tools for your computer can usually be found for free. Always look up your software before you buy it!
