How to remove AOL
      #378657 - Sat Jan 05 2008 07:32 PM

Is there an Idiots guide on how to remove AOL from your PC apart from add/remove programs as I have read in various posts that this does not get rid of everything completly.

I have googled but most of the links i have tried no longer work.

Thanks

No - I have been an AOL customer since 2003 and am migrating to another service provider. I have read on forums that even when you delete AOL via add/remove programs parts of it still remain and slow down your PC down.

I was hoping that somebody might help me remove it completely.

Lovely AOL

The best way maybe to reformat your PC and start again, however, that can take longer than below and also, if you have no way of backing up your data, then you may wish to follow these steps:

1. Use Add/Remove from the Control Panel. Make sure you include all versions and special add-ins, if so prompted.

(While you are at it you might want to remove the onerous resource hog Real Player and Netscape which packages with AOL.)

2. Alternative to #1 is using AOL's uninstall feature.

Neither #1 or #2 catches all the files or folders.

3. Go to Start/Search/Find Files or folders. Then Search for: *aol*.* Should pick up a few.
Then Search for *america*.* Should pick up a few more.

At this point the files and folders should be gone.

4. Download and install CCleaner to clear out any further missing GUNK

5. I use a licensed registry cleaner called RegSupreme Pro (30 Day free trial) Run it and find hundred of registry entries associated with AOL (and Real).

There's no idiot's guide as such , just , as you have found , various posts with others suggestions/thoughts. Don't know about you but whenever i uninstall anything from my pc it's a case of (a) add/remove programs followed by (b) Windows search facility for any remaining files (c) Manual search for anything windows search may have missed , and finally (d)Into the registry to delete all relevant entries.

Obviously (a) is straightforward , (b) pretty simple but need to be sure that what you're removing belongs to the application you are uninstalling , and , that it's removal won't affect any other app (c) basically the same as (b), and last but not least (d) the registry........one mistake here and you can find yourself with big problems. Only attempt the manual method if you REALLY know what you're doing. Alternative is a registry cleaner. They can go wrong but most have the option to back up before you make any changes.

All in all it's a case of leave things as they are , or.......get stuck in and go for it. .

Oh!!! hello there mouse , it's been a while , i see you've beat me to it.
