The Mac Mini is not cheap starting from £399
And what's in the Box
* • Mac mini * • Apple Remote * • DVI to VGA adapter * • Power cord * • Install/restore DVDs * • Printed and electronic documentation
You will have to supply a keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Remember all PC hardware is not always compatible with a Mac. And don't forget some of the software isn't either.

There's one benefit, it can run Windows too. I bought a Mac Pro, but didn't get on with Tiger, so I'm now running Vista on it (under Boot Camp). You can run XP should you wish too.
They're not that cheap, but equally PC manufacturers don't seem to have grasped the concept of small, simple, quiet PCs.

In my humble opinion, your needs are best suited to a PC, rather than a MAC. But it's true, they can be a tad noisy. I guess it depends on what you decide is too noisy. I have a Dell XPS 210, which is much small than a normal desktop PC, but it could do with a quieter fan. You should be able to install silent fans though. My partner has a Dell laptop and it's as quiet as a mouse.
