hi, the jingle on start up and shut down has gone missing on my laptop,its an ibm thinkpad t23 with xp sp2, the pc,s working fine but im just wondering why this has happened and if it means more troubles on the way,many thanks in advance.... dave.

Have a look here:
Control Panel > Sounds and Audio devices > Sounds > Sound scheme > Click the down arrow menu > Windows default.
This will give you're System back the sounds it had when new.
or
If you just want to change things, Under Program Events, scroll to each one, including Start and Exit Windows to change the sounds via the drop down menu.
