Using a computer to send / receive fax messages
      #377807 - Sun Dec 30 2007 04:11 PM

Hi

I was told once that you can use any computer to send or receive fax messages, with little effort.

I had never really thought this would be useful, as e-mail would always be better.

However, I now find the company I want to get hold of does not have an e-mail address. They are closed until the New Year too.

Sure I could phone them then, but thought sending a fax now would be a good option.

How is this done ?

Do you need special software ?

Sending only would be good enough really, but if you can receive faxes too ... that would be a bonus.

Can anybody help please ?

thanks !

Assuming you're using an XP System and using a dialup modem and NOT broadband, you simply write a document in say Word > File > Print > Select Fax in the printer menu > Follow the prompts in the wizard re name, phone number and if you want a cover letter etc.

Yes, it is possible...............although I only know how to do it in XP

start>all programs>accessories>communications>fax console.

If it is nor there, go control panel>add/remove programs>add/remove Windows components and put a tick in the "fax service" box, then go back through the route above to access it.

BUT, fax messages travel along phone lines in the same way as a phone call, so you need a dial up service. If you PC is linked to the big world through adsl or cable, no go unless you sign up for a dial up service, remove the adsl filters from the phone sockets and stick you non-adsl internal modem into the phone socket for the duration of your faxing, then reverse all of that when you want your BB back again.

Problem is return faxes, it's not as if your fax line and equipment are sitting waiting on someone wanting to reply to you. You have to set it all up and wait, or be told to expect one. I do not think it is worth the bother unless you have a dedicated machine.
