newbie looking for BIOS setup tips for P5N-E SLI /Q6600
      #377672 - Sat Dec 29 2007 06:23 PM

First of all, I'm looking to optimize my settings to get the most out of my new PC (vs overclocking to the point where stability or overheating become an issue).
I had a local VAR put together a new PC for me and, of course, it came with the the default BIOS setup.
I've never done any real BIOS tweaking or overclocking but I'd like to optimize the system's performance - without sacrificing stability). I'm not as much about gaming as wanting to optimize applications - esp. audio recording & conversion (thousands of LPs > WAV > FLAC > mp3, iPod & CDs).

Here's what I've got:
ASUS P5N-E SLI Quad Core NF6501
Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0.6000 Build 6000)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @2.40GHz, 2399 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)(apparently, B3 stepping?)
BIOS Version/Date Phoenix Technologies, LTD ASUS P5N-E SLI ACPI BIOS Revision 0801, 10/25/2007
SMBIOS Version 2.4
4x1G Kingston DDR2/800MHz + 4G (but Vista 32 only sees 3.58175G so I'm thinking of upgrading to 64 bit - once I check on the compatibility of my programs)
EVGA 8800GTS (640MB)
C drive: SATA 150G (10Krpm 16 MB) Raptor for Vista & program files
D&E drives: a pair of SATA 400G Seagate (7200rpm 16MB)
LITE-ON DVDRW LH-20A1H ATA
LITE-ON Combo DH52
Ihave a well vented Inwin Mid-Tower w/NISPIRE 650W power supply and (I guess) the stock Intel fan (~3.75").
So, I'm looking for "aggressive" (~2.8Ghz/sec) settings vs "turbo" (3.2+GHz/sec) type suggestions - on overclock settings, FSB, clock/memory ratio and all the other settings that ASUS documents so poorly in the manual.
Also, is additional cooling really a worthwhile investment?
ThanX!

Well the guy s' not a fool. Anybody sending out a new computer will keep the BIOS as standard settings as well as the voltages, he wouldn't be wanting to replace the CPU under warrenty caulsed by his own actions.

I would say it is.
