I can't write to my DVD+RW
      #377579 - Fri Dec 28 2007 09:26 PM

I have a Ricoh MP5125A DVD+RW/+R drive that I have recently moved over from an older computer, and which I believe works fine, but having installed it and its driver and having installed InCD to get it functioning as a backup resource I am disappointed to find that it will not write to disk. When I view InCD under the Drive's Properties it says that the "Drive supports MRW Write - No".
Why would it not support writing when it claims to be a DVD+RW/+R drive.
Using XP. The System tell me that the unit is functioning OK.
Thanks for any assistance.

Since asking the question I have found a driver for the Drive on the internet and downloaded it, thinking that the latest driver might sort out the problem, but when I Browse from the Drive's properties to find the new driver the dialogue box fails to recognize the file "m5a20172.ric" that i downloaded, and seems to want a file called with a .inf suffix.
Some explanation might help me. Thanks,

A .RIC file is a Ricoh Fax Graphics file, nothing to do with drivers. A .INF file carries information about the drivers and is used by devices to identify the correct parameters.

Don't bother with InCD. It makes rewritable CDs and DVDs act like floppy disks so you can drag and drop files to them. However, I've seen this cause many problems on systems.

Uninstall it and use the main Nero program to create CDs and DVDS.

G'day BadChough.

To avoid the following problems, it is imperative that the MP5125A drive's firmware
be updated to version 1.68 prior to use with these new discs.

<1-8X DVD+R disc compatibility information>
If you use the 8X DVD+R media with the firmware 1.64 or earlier,
the following problems may occur.
- Cannot write
- Cannot read the data written
<1-4X DVD+R disc compatibility information>

IMPORTANT

If you use the 4x DVD+R media with firmware 1.38 or earlier,
the following problem may occur.
- The process of writing to the disc cannot start.
- Data written to the disc cannot be read.

Yes, thanks, sandhound, I had read the same information and had been to www.opendrivers.com and downloaded version 1.72. However when I unzipped the download there appears to be only the file "m5a20172.ric" within. Hence my confusion. When I double click the file I get an error message from Windows saying it doesn't know how to open the file.
So near and yet so far....

I would suggest that go to the manufacturers site for your upgrade rather than some third party drivers site.

First read this which explains how to do a firmware upgrade.

Then go here to get your download.
