I am trying to install these updates (See below) on a friend's PC that has refused to upgrade IE or Media Player for about a year now. I managed to get about 38 outstanding updates to install just now and used CCleaner to fix about 100 registry errors but still no banana.
IT has XP with SP2 and is otherwise up to date. Runs regular spyware ad virus checks and nothign obvious about.
Any suggestions?

Could be . Another possibility is one of his security programmes is preventing the install/s making changes to the registry. You could try downloading the install files to the hard drive then booting the pc into safe mode and try to install from there.
Mmm same prob when I disable all firewall and other security SW. Will try and install in safe mode but need to get to the machine to try that. Other ideas welcome ta Mike
Go back to windows updates. Once the pc has been scanned you will get an option in the left hand pane to review update history. Failed updates are denoted by a red cross . Clicking on the cross should present you with an error code and a list of self-help options. If you let us know the codes we may be able to help.
