External hard drive
      #377412 - Thu Dec 27 2007 08:46 PM

I'm looking to buy en external hard drive but I know next to nothing about them.
It's mainly to back up photo's and music.
Do I have to have it running along with my pc or do I just connect it when I want to back up new pictures?
Can anyone recommend a make ?
What about storage? Is 500GB too much/not enough?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

John

External hard discs are an excellent way to back up files. They are fairly reliable, have masses of storage and they have the obvious advantage of being able to move around from computer to computer. They can also connect via USB/Firewire so almost every computer is compatible with them.

The drive you buy depends entirely on how much is needed to store and obviously your price limit. a 500GB drive like you have stated is likely going to cost you upwards of £85.

I have a large collection of music, videos and pictures and I find that 180GB is enough to store it all with room for plenty more. This model is quite reliable and manufactured by Seagate. It comes with warranty and is from a website I know and trust. The cost with delivery for that particular piece of kit would be around £60. You're more than welcome to shop around though

Oh and to answer your other question, no, it does not need to be connected to the PC at all times. It can be turned off when you are not using it to save power or to move it to another location

Any more questions, just reply here!

Thanks for that GMAC.
Very helpfull.
Its mainly photos that I'll be backing up so it looks as if the 250 GB should be plenty.
Thanks again

John

I'm quite interested in the Seagate FreeAgent 250G. Just wanted to know if you had any problems with the drive slowing your system down. I read a complaint on the site by someone who said they had problems with it and a mate of mine said his pc crashed evrytime he tried to use it. They're both using the same xp sp2 OS as me so i'm wondering if you had any probs with it and how did you fix them if you had.
