I recently bought a wireless router made by Netgear. The installation went well until I had to connect the router to the cable modem and i noticed there was no USB port. There is an ethernet port in the back of the modem but it isn't set up to work with ethernet (you see i had the option when setting up the modem to use ethernet or USB and it recomended USB.) I saw some USB to ethernet adaptors(like this one http://www.lanshop.co.uk/productcategorydetail.aspx?categoryid=54961 ) but they seem to be for the PC to receive ethernet cables, not the modem. I was wondering if anyone knows if that would work or had any other ideas.
Thanks

First of all, USB is not recommended for network connections. USB was not and is not designed for networking. It uses an excessive amount of PC resource and is unreliable. Neither Telewest or NTL (now Virgin Media) recommend using the USB port on their modems.
The adaptor you mention will not work and in any case you don't need one. First, uninstall the USB modem on the PC then power down both the VM modem and the PC. By that I mean remove the power leads from both. Now connect the VM modem to your router using an ethernet cable. Next connect your router to your PC, again using an ethernet cable.
Now power up the modem. Wait two minutes then power up the router. Finally power up your PC and you should be able to connect to the internet. Once the system is working with cables you can move on to the wireless setup.
