Hi All, I can't seem to get my pc and tv/lcd to work correctly. I have a Dell Pentium 4 with Intel(R) 82865G grahics card (integrated I think, but not sure) and Intel(R) Extreme graphics 2. My tv/lcd is a 20 inch Samsung lcd (model LW20M21C) I have them connected with a SVGA lead. I can only get the display to work on 640 x 480 at 60 htz and although the desk top background is ok the icons are very large as is the general display. Windows recognizes this and asks if I want it corrected, and on saying yes the screen goes black and says "mode not supported" and reverts back to 640 x 480 at 60 htz. I have all the latest driver updates (also tried older drivers) and have tried numerous changes in the display properties but to no avail. Is it possible the graphics card is not compatable with the Samsung tv or am I using the wrong cable connection? It works ok ish on my 27 inch Toshiba but the Mrs won't let me have it on that one! Any help would be appreciated as i'm new to the desk top world having just changed from laptop bliss. Thanks johnny D

G'day Soundhound, Thanks for the reply. Apologies for the delay. I work funny hours. Being abit of a novice, I don't quite know what i'm mean't to do in respect of your reply. I've gone down many a route within the graphics and display properties all to no avail and I don't understand what your reply is wanting me to do. I can't find anything in the tv manual/menu or the grahics adaptor properties to make setting adjustments like you suggest, if that's what you were implying. The suggested res according to the tv manual is 640 x 480 at 60 htz. As you point out it is 4/3 ratio and not hd ready either I know the pc works ok on standard monitors so do you think it could be my tv is too modern (for a better word) for the Intel(R) 82865G adaptor and should I be upgrading the card. Is it worth looking at on of these. http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/intel845g/sb/cs-009070.htm According to the local pc shop I have the correct vga cable. There is a '9 pin' port on the card (IOIOI) but i'm not sure what that is and my tv also has svideo. Any help and advice is greatly appreciated Johnny D

If the specification given by Sandhound for your TV is correct then your television has an HD-15 connection as described here. You will have a similar port on your PC where your current monitor is connected. Is it these two ports that are connected together?
If the manual with the TV says 640 x 480 @60hz is the correct input then I'm afraid the picture you are getting with very large icons is as good as it gets. Getting a better graphics card won't help because the TV couldn't deal with a greater input anyway. To check that your current card can actually produce that output, try it on your current monitor and see what it looks like.

Hi greyst Are you saying I may have to buy a new monitor then? The wife won't be happy as it's only 2 years old! Sandhound is correct with his itinery and i'm using a 15 pin connection as you show. Here's the pdf manual http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/200404/20040428114441171_BN68-00633C-01Eng.pdf Page 49 I think you need to look at please. The pc was 2nd hand and I only bought the tower as I thought it would work ok on my tv. Like I said in the original it works ok on my 27inch lcd Tosiba (27WLT56) using the vga and I can change the settings to a variety of resolutions from 640x480, 800x600 etc. Some look better than others. I'll be disapointed with the tv if I cant get it to work/display correctly. I thought samsungs were one of the 'top of the pops' in the digital world. Any ideas of the best route to go? Thanks Johnny D

There seems to be some confusion here. Did you buy that piece of equipment as a television or a PC monitor? If as a TV then there is nothing wrong with it at all.
If you bought it as a monitor for a PC then what you've seen so far is as good as it gets. It simply is not good enough to act as a PC monitor in any real sense.
Page 49 is telling you that with a 20inch TV and VGA input the best you can get is 640 x 480 at 60hz. The SVGA, XGA and SXGA input modes are only available on the 15 and 17 inch models so even if you had that output from your PC your TV couldn't cope with it.
Your next step? Use the Samsung for it's intended purpose, a 20 inch television and nothing else. If you want a 20 inch PC monitor I'm afraid you are going to have to go and buy one. Or, of course, live with what you've got.

Thanks greyst. I did buy it as a tv originally and I thought it would be a straight forward connect up with the vga to use as a pc monitor. Obviously not though. I think i'll buy a new monitor as that seems to be the best solution or work on the wife and have it on the Tosh. Thanks to you and the sandman for your help Johnny D
