Login screen doesn't appear

When I switch on, my laptop goes through the boot up procedure but stops before displaying the log in screen. This doesn't occur everytime, also sometimes after getting the log on screen the desktop icons don't appear. I have XP operating system. Can anyone suggest a solution. Many thanks

Could be the hard drive failing.

Go to Start > Run.

Type chkdsk /f /r (note the spaces) and press Enter.

You will get a message about starting a check at next boot. Enter Y and restart.

This will correct erros but not fix your hard drive. You need to download a utility from the manufacturer's website to check it properly.

In Device Manager, what does it say under hard drive?

It will work for now, but once you get bad sectors on your hard drive, it will only get worse.

I'd recommend you back up everything you need to keep and get a new hard drive and reinstall Windows.
