The response from eBay is typical of the whole ethos of that company - 'it's not my problem'. They are quite happy to sit back and watch the money roll in but couldn't care two figs about the stolen and illegal gear being sold through their system. The French are quite right - if it looks like a haddock, smells like a haddock and tastes like a haddock, it probably is a haddock. Not an auction house? What the hell else is it then?

Wasn't there a similar French 'action' against Itunes - in that you could not play Itunes tracks directly on other MP3s?

It was a nice idea, but like most things, never gets over the border.

I read the letter in this week's WebUser, but WHY did the guy buy ANOTHER when he got ripped off once? Duh!

An Auction in this country has a auctioneer and both buyer and seller have to pay a commission on the sales.
On E Bay there is no auctioneer and only the seller pays the commission.
Yes there is illegal and maybe stolen goods for sale on it but by the same rule there are a lot of genuine sellers and buyers that use it. Lets face it most people use it at some time or another and Ive had some good bargains from it.
You just have to be sensible about what you buy.
Like most things if you don't like E Bay then don't log on to it. Nobody is forcing you.
As for the French, do we really care what they do? I don't.

Yet another example of stupid greedy people. He saw something for sale that quite clearly was dramatically under priced and it came from China. What the hell did expect he would be getting? He was right about eBay not caring a toss but that still begs the question, why did he spend money on something that was quite clearly illegal - twice??

We got hit a few months ago by Chinese Spammers. We were offered PS3s and Wiis but I just deleted them as junk.

Then reading the eBay Community boards I came across an entry by someone asking what they could do about a bank transfer they had made. Another asked 'how much, what for' and it transpired that this person had responded to spam email and ordered a few hundrded Wii's and PS3s and sunk the best part of £3,000 into the venture. Oh, and paid by bank transfer. And, yes, ALL done over the net with no other contact. They hadn't heard back - the website they were using turned out to be a front................The seller's PayPal account had 'problems' at the time.

Now at what point did any sensible person turn away from this? At how many points in the 'loop' did this person think 'should I? shouldn't I?'

The guy buying two MP3s is a smaller scale, but twice as daft in my book. But, sorry to say it, so is the person who gave him £25 for the Star Letter. I think most sensible people know that anything with a China/Hong Kong tag on it on eBay should be treated with caution. To do it once is regrettable (maybe sort of understandable) but twice..........I just can't get it.

Thanks Greysts - I'm pleased to see that I am not alone.

How do you think he will spend it? I know! Buy an MP3 Player off some Chinese seller on eBay!!

Wait! It does not have the GB I paid for. Just like the last two............

This could be a series.......
