home network problem
      #374704 - Wed Dec 05 2007 11:42 AM

hi,
I have a problem with my network. I have a desktop that is wired to the internet via ethernet to a belkin router and works fine, i also have a laptop that connects to the internet wirelessly and works fine, the problem is that i cannot get them to talk to each other, i have run the network setup wizards on both computers to no avail. I am probarbly missing something but i don't what. Any help will be gratefully accepted.
regards

Are you able to view each computer from the other one using the "My Network Places" option? Go through that and choose MSHome and click through there to see if you can

Presumably both running WinXP.

Have you set up a workgroup? If not do it by right-clicking My Computer > Properties > Computer Name and change the default Workgroup Name to something more meaningful in your household, also make the Computer Name recognisable, e.g. MainPC or IBMPC. The computer should reboot. Now identify the folders/files you want to share and right-click them and select share and read or read/write access. A little hand should appear under those that are shared.

Repeat this on other PCs, use the same workgroup name but, of course, a different computer name.

To see or copy files, go to Start > My Network Places (Network in Vista) and the computers/folders/files should appear. In Explorer drag them from one PC to the other.

Share a printer, here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/maintain/printers.mspx

hi Burrwalnut,
yes both computers are running xp. I have carried out the tasks you mentioned but i still cannot see the main pc from the laptop computer, on the other hand,i can see the laptop from the main pc but when i click on it i get a message saying 'laptop is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. the network path was not found.' Also when i click on 'show workgroup computers' on the laptop only the laptop shows.

The vast majority of cases such as yours boil down to a firewall problem. Are you running a firewall on either PC?

And have you allowed access through the firewall so each machine can talk to the other?

I'm afraid I know nothing about your particular firewall but I imagine it has a help file somewhere. Why don't you look at that and see what it tells you about sharing files between computers.

The control referred to is normally in something called "Zones" or similar. If you have one PC set to high, then it is doing its job by making it invisible to others. Also, if you have a wireless Router, there is probably a security setting which says "Hide wireless network" again, this is doing its job, but stops your PCs recognising esch other when configuring.

my network is now working as it should. However it only started to work after i disabled the firewall on my laptop. i didn't need to disable the firewall on the pc as it could see the laptop with it enabled.
Anyway after i connected to the network with the laptop with its firewall disabled, i re-enabled it while connected, and the laptop still stayed connected to the network. I then turned both computers off then on again, with both firewalls enabled i attempted to access the network with the laptop and it worked, all i can think is that it needed to connect to the network with the firewall disabled first, then after the first connection some settings were updated this then allowes the laptop to connect with the firewall enabled.
It makes no sense to me and my explanation may be rubbish, but suffice to say it now works and thanks to all helped me.
