Hi all
My daughter has tried to connect her laptop to our secure wireless network but the laptop cannot 'see' the network to connect to it. She then tried taking setiings from my laptop by pen and lost sight of my wireless network on that one also. Any ideas?

I would guess it's because you've stopped broadcasting of the SSID from the router. You may have to temporarily re-enable it whilst you connect.

What's the make and model number of your router?

Its a netgear dg834.
But last night I got frustrated with it and pushed the wee button on the back to restore to factory settings - then reinstalled the PC upstairs where the software is. Got that working fine without security and then tried to set up the laptops to talk to the modem. Successful for the other laptop and intermittently with my laptop. But not as beautifully as it was before. For example - working fine eventually after tweaking this and that but this morning not connecting even tho the bars and wee monitor that says it is connected where all doing as they should be. Just when I tried to open IE it said it was not connected.
Any help would be great.
Brought the lap top to work this morning thinking I could try it on the wifi here and see if it connects.

As it actually connects now you've clearly solved the problem of the SSID but you've now got a totally unsecured network which means it is wide open to any passing hacker who fancies using your bandwidth to download his porn and take over your computers to turn them into net bots.
You must get that sorted straight away by setting up WPA(PSK), switching off broadcast SSID, changing the network name and changing the router's admin password.
When you've done all that try changing the channel through which the router connects to the PCs.

Thank you, smile. I realise the dangers of the outsider hacking in etc. Will fix that tonight. What is this channel thingy?

A router will automatically find what it considers to be the best wireless frequency to connect to a PC. You may find that in your house a different frequency would be better so it allows you to change to a different one.
Incidentally if you've left the router switched on all day today you've probably left it to late to fix your security.
