Hi there,
Hopefully someone can help me. Had a laptop for about two years but hardly used it. Something went wrong so having to re-install Windows.
When I do it from the recovery disk I get to the selecting partition screen but after that I get a screen that says:
"An error occurred while setup was updating partition information on:
57232 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on ata (MBR).
Setup cannot continue. To quite setup, press F3."
Anyone any suggestions please?? Not sure if it's related but there's lots of clicking noises when it says it's scanning 57323 MB Disk, earlier on in the process.
Many thanks in advance for any help.

Doesn't sound too good, I'm afraid. What was the original reason for re-installing Windows?

To be honest, I can't remember. Must have been having problems and as last resort did that.
What do you think can be done about it, if anything?

The reason I need to know why you re-installed windows is because I wanted to find out what, if any, error messages you had. We'll try and format the disk using a different method. Do both the PC you are using now and the broken one have floppy drives?

Can you beg or borrow a full Windows XP CD?

I'm sure I can get one from somewhere. Do I then just put that CD in and boot from that?

Yes you just boot from that but first check that you have YOUR COA number for your computer. Its usually on the bottom of the laptop.

When you get the CD don't just go for the Windows install. First thing to do is to delete ALL the existing partitions on the hard disk. That makes sure there is nothing left from the old system to interfere with the new install. Then create a brand new partition, format it NTFS and then do the install.

Cheers - do I need to know what NTFS is? Is it quite straight forward to do that partition deletion? will the XP cd that came with the laptop not do the job if i delete the partitions? Thanks for ongoing help!

No you don't need to know what NTFS is, you'll be given the option during the install phase.
I was under the impression that the CD you had was a RESTORE CD rather than a full install version. If you can do what I said with the CD you've got, by all means use that.
If you check the various options as you go through the install you will find a section that allows you to delete what you've already got and start over.
