Hi One house, two laptops, one belkin G+ Router - Constant network dropouts.
Im having problems with the connection to the internet. When my girlfriend talks to her parents on skype from her laptop the connection fails like clockwork every 4 and a bit minutes. When i recently used skype to talk to my girlfriend from my laptop it didn't drop out once. Same problem with internet connection. Some days there is no dropout at all from my computer and other days (like today, whilst trying to write this message!) it is dropping out 6 or 7 times in ten minutes!I have studied the network connection page and every 4 or so minutes the page which shows network connection details goes blank for around 10 to 15 seconds and status shows: Acquiring network address and then goes back to showing: Connected. This is averages every 3-4 mins! Can someone tell me why this happens? Why does it drop out so regularly and how can i fix it so that it stays connected all of the time? All of these addresses are shown during connection: Physical address,IP Address,Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DHCP Server etc..... but they all disappear for a few seconds and then reappear a few seconds later. Every time this happens the connection to the internet is lost. I really need your help with understanding this. Please respond. Thanks

Something else i should add is that both my laptop and my girlfriends laptop seem to be connected for some reason. To explain, as i type this i have my girlfriends laptop open and online next to me on the table. I decided to close the lid on her computer which puts the computer into sleep mode. After i did this my connection to the network went down. A yellow symbol with a black exclamation appeared on my wireless icon and a message reads that i have limited or no connectivity. Trying to repair the connection doesn't work unless i wake up the other computer! At which point i can reconnect. Can someone tell me why these computers are linked and how i can cut the link so that the laptops a fully independent of each other. Would doing this stop the dropouts we are experiencing?
Any help you can give is much appreciated.

It sounds to me as if both computers have got the same IP address, Can you go to Start, Run, type in CMD and click OK. In the resultant DOS window type in IPCONFIG /ALL and press enter. Do this on both PCs and tell me what IP address you get returned.

Thank you for responding. OK, on my computer it says: Physical address 00-13-02-AC-AA-EE DHCP Enabled..............yes Auto config Enabled.......yes IP Address 192.168.2.2 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.2.1 DHCP server 192.168.2.1 DNS Servers 85.255.116.100 85.255.112.169 On her Computer it says: Physical address 00-13-02-30-59-13 DHCP Enabled..............yes Auto config Enabled.......yes IP Address 192.168.2.3 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.2.1 DHCP server 192.168.2.1 DNS Servers 81.1.113.56 81.1.65.56 So what does all of this say to you? It seems like the IP Address is slightly different by one number.

G'day dekuil.
Both computers should have the same DNS server address(s). I would go for the 81. - Tiscali UK
IP address(s) OK.

Hi Sandhound,
Thanks for your input.
Do you know what reason there would be for the difference in DNS Server addresses? I have checked my Belkin router setup and it shows that the DNS Server should be the one my girlfriends computer is using, the 81 number. I don't understand why my computer would be using the 85 number. I have the belkin router setup so that the DNS is setup automatically from the ISP so as we are both accessing the internet through the same router by the same ISP how can they be different? Im lost! Should i change my DNS Server to match my girlfriends and will this fix our connection problems?? Please explain what I should do to make the DNS server the same for both laptops as i haven't got a clue.

G'day dekuil.
If you have checked - obtain IP address automatically then the DNS should be set correct
The computer using DNS address 85.100.###.###
It might be best to go to the HJT part of the forum and read here and then post a log in the HJT forum.

So by steering me to this other forum are you saying that my computer has a virus/spyware/malware? I don't see how, as i have norton internet security and spyware doctor running on my pc. Before i go reposting this thread could you please explain why i should go to this other forum as i don't see the connection with my problem and a possible virus.

Because the IP address 85.255.112.169 is associated with malware. We have people in the HJT forum with far more security on board than you who get infected because they download stuff that carries infection.
However the choice is yours. You've been given good advice and if you choose to ignore it, so be it. I will close this thread.
