Hi everybody, I'm new to the board and would be grateful for some advice re screen resolution. I bought a 19" Philips lcd tv/monitor recently and am unable to set the resolution. The screen is unreadable apart from when I boot up when all's sharp.
The book tells me that the resolution should be set to 1024 x 768 @60Hz. Clicking on control panel/display/adapter gives a list of resolutions but this particular one is not on the list.
I've tried the driver disc but am unable to read the screen to proceed.
The graphics card is a Radeon 9550 if this is any help and the pc is an Advent (about 3 years old).

That probably means that your graphics card isn't good enough to drive the screen at that resolution. What's the maximum resolution available when you go to control panel?

I smell a rat. The specifications for that card should definitely produce the stated resolution. I recommend trying a driver update.
I've dug up the driver for your card and it can be downloaded from AMD/ATI Radeon Driver Page. I recommend the smaller, 16MB file which will just install the essentials.
Just might let you get that screen resolution

Maximum resolution is 2048 x 1536.
I've downloaded the driver as recommended and that res now shows in the list.
Do I need to do anything re the driver download as the screen is still unreadable?

If you downloaded the driver and installed it you need do no more with the file. However that doesn't seem to helped. I assume you had no problem with the previous screen? Is it a wide screen (16:9) or a standard size (4:3)?

Do a bit of trial and error. Find what resolution looks best to you. I suggest starting from 800x600 and working your way up until you get a result you prefer.

Are you connecting to this screen using a VGA port or DVI?

Thanks gmac. I've tried several different resolutions from the list but reading the values is difficult! I'll try again though.
The output on the tower is vga and the monitor input is dvi greysts. I bought a cable off ebay and it crossed my mind initially if the cable was dodgy? Cheers.

Well there's your problem then. VGA output produces an analog signal. DVI demands a digital input. You can't make the two talk to each other properly with a cable. You must either use the VGA input on the monitor or buy yourself a new graphics card with a DVI output. The cable you bought off eBay is for the reverse of what you want - DVI out of the tower and VGA into the screen because you aren't trying to improve the signal that way, simply degrade it.
