You'll have to explain that a bit more - Quote:
transferred some files to my external hdd
and Quote:
it will not open the dvd tray
don't seem to add up. Has your external HDD got a DVD tray as well? What are you actually trying to do?

my pc was freezing and I could not get any restore points to an early time. the internal hdd, 40gb,was full, therefore my friend surgessed that we should transfer files to an external hdd, clear the internal hdd and reload windows xp. having transferred personal files and windows office to the external hdd, he then tried to clear the system and insert the windows xp disk, but the dvd tray will not open. the setup indicates that items are not activated. also, cannot get into safe mode.hope this helps

G'day llucky173.
Unplug the external HDD from the computer.

It sounds as if you can get into the BIOS setup so whilst in there change the boot order so that it looks for the CD/DVD drive first. Then save the changes and exit. Next remove the power lead from the computer and using a straightened paper clip insert it in the hole in the face of the DVD drive just underneath the tray. That will open the tray. Place your Windows CD in the drive and power up the PC. The drive should close and you will be asked if you want to install Windows. Delete all the existing partitions on the hard disk, create a new one then start the install.
