Additional USB 2.0 card
      #373693 - Mon Nov 26 2007 08:35 PM

Can anyone advise me on the correct 2.0 usb card to install onto my Dell Dimension 3000 ? I want to do away with my old 4 way hub which is not 2.0, and have looked around a few sites and they are all reasonably priced. I would like something which would not require me in the future to fit a hub outwith the carcase. At present there are two slots on the unit. Thanks.

It's almost guaranteed that the type of card needed will be PCI style.

You say there are two slots but I'm not sure whether you have opened up the computer and checked this. Usually, you can check if theres room on the motherboard by sliding off the side panel (you may have to do some unscrewing and/or break a warranty sticker, so this is at your own risk) and looking inside. You should see some cards in the board, and if theres room for more you'll see what is usually a white coloured slot to place an additional card in.

You are looking for this, really:

If you see one or more slots you are good to go out and buy a card to fit. All that I have come across are "PCI" but be sure to check anyway. When you have your card, it is simply a matter of breaking out/unscrewing the back plate (where the card will show its USB ports outside of the case), inserting the card into the slot and securing it with screws or clips, whichever your case uses.

Fitting it should look a little like this:

Check back if you have more questions or if you are unsure about anything I have mentioned!

Additionally, the card you want is of your own choosing, but I recommend a 5 or 4 slotter like this

Thanks again GMAC, the reason for this is my new Iomega drive, (as you know),
making me tidy things up to the rear of my comp. This Belkin unit is exactly what I need and have sent E to them to check that it will do for my Dell Dimension 3000, as the spare slots are horizontal and 100mm/4" long approx.
I would imagine these are standard anyway but worth checking.
Cheers for your time spent to assist. Cauldbum.

GMAC. Have rec'd and installed my additional 2.0 USB card and it is working fine.
Being rather simple I expected 5 usb slots on the face of the card but there are only 4 with one internal.
There is a variation between them, however for my basic usage all is ok. Cheers Cauldbum.

Although it looks untidy you could do what I've done with that fifth internal port. Before you put the side back on the PC connect a USB cable to the internal port and find a suitable orifice somewhere at the back of the PC to feed the wire through. I'm using it for a small Brother label printer that sits on top of the tower so it only needed a short bit of wire.

Make sure that the hole in the case hasn't got any rough edges or again do what I did - stick a bit of insulating tape round the edges of the hole. All that 'cos I was to mean to buy a USB hub!

Personally I use the internal slot for a Bluetooth dongle. Nice and out of the way, and a window in the side panel of the case stops signal loss. Have previously done a variation of greysts idea too with success

Good to know another one's sorted,
