When I call up Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel I get the window which tells me to wait while the list is populated, but it never is populated. Anyone got any thoughts, please. GeoffRHC

It can take some time depending upon how many programs are installed but I guess you wouldn‘t have posted here unless you‘d waited some time. One of these might work:-
1. Go to Start > Run > type REGSVR32 APPWIZ.CPL (capitals for clarity only, also note the space) and press Enter. Then again Start > Run > type REGSVR32 MSHTML.DLL and press Enter.
2. If 1) is not successful, try this but create a system restore point first just in case anything goes wrong. Go to Start > Run, type regedit, press Enter and navigate to registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management In the left pane, right-click ARPCache and delete it. Reboot the computer. NOTE: The ARPCache key is where Add/Remove stores the details of programs that show in the list but it doesn't remove the details when you uninstall a program. If you look down the list (before deleting it, of course) you will see all the Windows updates as well as old programs. After deletion the key will be recreated by Windows.
3. If 2) is not successful or you can’t access regedit I suspect that you have caught something nasty so go to the HijackThis section of the forum, read the posting rules and submit a log.

My thanks to BurrWalnut for the reply to my enquiry. 1.These programs are there. 2.This did not work. 3.I do not think this is the case as nothing else seems to be affected. Anyway I did a laborious trawl through Microsoft Support and discovered, almost hidden at the end of another piece of help, that Microsoft know that this fault can affect Windows XP (amongst other operating systems). They suggest checking for the presence of a number of keys in the registry, but I have not had the time to go through them as yet. Thanks again, GeoffRHC

Microsoft support...........don't know if it's the same one you've found ? . If not there's a long list to trail through. Oh !!!! and don't discount BurrWalnut's suggestion of it being something nasty , there's some clever little bug***s out there. You've nothing to lose by posting a log.

You said number 2 didn't work.
Ordinarily, removing that key does two things, 1) the key is recreated and by implication, any corruption is removed and 2) it speeds up the display of Add/Remove Programs by removing spurious entries that have accumulated since it was last deleted.
1. Was the key ARPCache removed and rebuilt? 2. Did deleting it not solve the Add/Remove display?
