unrecognizable discs
      #373339 - Fri Nov 23 2007 11:11 PM

Does anyone know why my dvd-rw would stop recognizing blank discs when I try to record playlists in WMP. Ive tried both rw discs and cd-rs without any joy. I am beginning to think its my computer instead of WMP thats the problem. I ran Avast virus scan but its not picking anything up and tried an anti-root kit to no avail. Its driving me mad.....

Thanks for your prompt reply. Its a Pioneer DVR-112D. Before loading the disc if I run a pre-recorded DVD then put in a blank it recognizes it but when I start recording it analyse the tracks to be recorded then starts burn, gets to the second track then jumps and says disc full. Then the computer does not give me an option to erase the disc to try again.

have you tried uninstalling the dvd/rw and reinstalling it ?

right click MY COMPUTER>>PROPERTIES>>HARDWARE>>DEVICE MANAGER.

scroll down to DVD CD ROM DRIVES.
click on the "+" sign to expand it, right click on your dvd r/w and select UNINSTALL.

then reboot your computer, it should find it and reinstall it.

I have an external Freecom DVD burner, not used much but out of warranty. It will play cd's and burn cd's but not DVD's and if you try to it gives various reasons for failing. Also, it won't play all DVD's with mp3 files on them burned on the computer's internal burner. They only play on the internal drive. And this is the same now that I am using a newly installed DVD burner in that computer. The good news is that they play on another internal DVD burner in my new pc as well, so at least it would appear the fault is within the external burner.

My worry always was that the discs had been burned and would not play anymore so all the time and effort was a waste of time and my files lost.

I agree that sometimes it's worth replacing equipment.

i haven't seen a dvd burner yet that came with it's own drivers.
usually the disc that comes with them only contains burning software......nero etc.
uninstalling the dvd writer will not remove your burning software.
they usually use generic drivers from microsoft. the computer will recognize the dvd when you reboot and install it.
