slipstream using nLite
      #372972 - Wed Nov 21 2007 12:29 PM

Hi,

I tried to follow the magazine slipstreaming using nLite:

I followed everything as was suggested.
However, I am left with a combined xp + sp2 @ 768mb.
As A cd only holds 700mb. I am unable to burn the combination.

No where does it say>- compress product?

I have an XP Proffesional OEM! Could it be that it contains sp1?and if so, how do I remove it!

If not, how do I compress the file?

Something's not right.

I've slipstreamed XP Pro, Service Pack 2 (this includes all SP1 files) and all MS Updates released since SP2.

The total size on my CD is 620mb.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

What's the total file size on your original XP CD? I have an XP Pro disk without any services packs applied and that totals 484mb. The largest directory on that CD is /i386 at around 460mb. What's yours? It shouldn't be much bigger because the slipstream process replaces a lot files with more up to date ones.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

Hi,

I am surprised to see others with a lot less than my own...
on cd it is 586mb just over 735mb on disk!

It is OEM - but I dont know what to remove!

How big is the i386 directory on the CD?

The i386 is a massive 423 mb!

Can this be reduced without affecting the instalation?

That file size for i386 is about right and no, it cannot be reduced in size. The remaining directories on the CD should be no more than about 50mb. Scan through the other directories and tell us the size and name of the next largest one.

I don't think what you've got there is an original Windows XP CD from Microsoft. It seems more likely to be a Hewlett Packard generated backup CD created when the PC was brand new. If that's what it is then what you are trying do can't be done. This directory

does not exist on a standard XP CD.

Hi,

Looked in at USWXP32P ZX

It has: a window file @ 281mb! the rest of folder = just 28 mb.

Documents & settings is the main part of rest.

Should the window file be in there like that ?

You haven't told me if it's a genuine original Windows CD yet.

It sounds like the standard method used by HP when they deliver a professional system. The CD has actually got a lot more on board than the standard Microsoft XP Pro because HP also include a whole pile of their own software so that should you need to start from scratch you have most of what you need already on the CD.

The important bit as far as slipstreaming is concerned is the i386 directory. If you are still keen on doing it I would copy everything of that HP CD, EXCEPT that special HP directory, to another CD and then use that for your slipstreaming.
