My mother has just got broadband in which is wired into the ground floor. She got a Buffalo router and it all works when the windows XP computer is in the same room as router but when she takes it upstairs, 1 floor, it shows router connected but she can not access internet or email. Even though the computer says it is getting a signal is it not strong enough? The broadband and router are near the TV, could this be having an effect?
It's very difficult to identify why a wireless signal is failing without specialist equipment. The general recommendations are that the router is as far away from electrical interference as possible, that it is sited high up in the room and there are as a few walls or floors between the router and PC as possible. You can get wireless 'boosters', in effect a receiver/transmitter sited between the router and PC but lets not go down that road just yet. She could also try changing the channel on the router to see if that gives a better signal.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.
