Hi
Im thinking of getting an 80gb ipod classic to replace my 20gb creative zen mp3 player.
However I am slightly worried because I have heard that if an ipod crashes or something else goes wrong you have to use the 'restore' function to make it work again and you lose all your music.
I would be in a difficult position if this happened as I do not store all my music on my PC and if this happened I would lose a lot of music.
My Creative has crashed but all that does is rebuild my library so I do not lose any songs.
A while ago my computer did crash and the good thing was I could simply copy my music back from my creative player.
Any advice/help etc?

Whether you go for an iPod or not, you shouldn't use that as the only source for your .mp3 files, you should back these up on your PC as well as onto an external hard disc.
I'd buy an external disc before you buy your .mp3 player.
I've had an 80gb iPod for a good few months now, it's in a sturdy hardened leather casing that fits the iPod perfectly and this has protected it on a few occassions when I have dropped it.

Thanks Mouse
I will buy an external hard disk but wont be for a while yet. My friend said that im not likely to have issues if I get an ipod as you only normally have to restore it if an update goes wrong or if you don't regurlarly use your ipod and I would be using it nearly everyday.
Have you had any problems with yours?

None as of yet, hoping I don't jinx it. Not sure where you'd have an update issue either, as the updates are usually just for iTunes, which I don't use, as I have a plug-in for WMP11

Oh right well thats good to hear
The update thing is when you use iTunes if you connect it and if you open iTunes and click on your ipod it should say update.
Apparently the update helps fix bugs in your ipod and sometimes the speed is increased ETC.
Thanks

I don't mean when you update iTunes. Theyre is an option in iTunes to update your iPods firmware which can help fix bugs and things but if you disconnect it or something else goes wrong when is updating you are most likely to have to restore it which loses your music and everything else

Now I get where you're coming from. That's fairly obvious not to disconnect the device whilst it's updating.

A powercut? If you're really worried about a powercut, then quit using a PC altogether!
If not then you may want to grab yourself a UPS.
As you say, the same could happen with anything. It's going to be quite rare for your iPod to screw up from an update. Like I say, whether you're worried about losing your .mp3 files or not, I would definatley get an external hard disc, that way if you do end up bamjaxing your iPod, at least you will always have your music (and other data) backed up.

Im not lol I was just giving an example im not worried about things like that I was just giving an example but was generally worried about he idea of me losing the music.
Even if I do get an external harddrive I wouldn't like the thought that I would have to keep copying it back to the iPod.
My friend said he has to restore his quite oftern but maybe that is because he doesnt use it very much.

Why would you need to copy the music back to the iPod?
You have the music on your PC in the My Music folder, you back that folder up onto an external drive.
You select what music you want to listen to on your iPod and you synch that with your iPod, you still have the music on your PC your external drive and your selection on your iPod, that's it.

Im going to be putting all my music onto my ipod not just storing it on my computer as well i mean from my cds.
And even if I do back it up or copy it back from my music it would still be very frustraiting putting it all back on.

I don't think you're understanding me;
You rip your music to the PC, you have your .mp3 collection stored in My Music, when you select music to put on your iPod, it doesn't take it off your PC, it just takes copies of the music you select. The music on your iPod is still on your PC.
Backing up your music to an external drive is essential, in case of failure, virus etc. It's pointless putting music on your iPod and then deleting it from your PC. If you're worried about space, then ensure you have it all backed up before you delete.
It's very, very unlikely that your iPod will fail.

Ok thanks.
I know the music would still be on the pc I just didnt know if iPods worked in the same way mp3s do but you saying its unlikely it will fail has made me fell a lot better thanks!
The reason I want to delete the music off my pc is because I want to store my entire music collection on my iPod but not my pc reason being there are tracks I might fancy listening to once in a while when im out and about but not on my pc.
Thanks Mouse

Cool, I'd still opt for the external drive, it will be much easier getting access to your music. Don't forget what happens when you have more than 80gb of music, what do you do then?
