hello,
I bought an ethernet card with the notion that it would help me speed up my internet conection with my NTL external cable modem (which has ethernet facility). However, it has never worked with the modem although im sure that it is connected as it registers when i first turn on the computer. There is a message in the network connections bow which reads 'Local area connection, Network cable unplugged, VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Ad...'. Any help at all would be most appreciated.

Make sure the connection is set to get an ip address automatically:
Right-click the newtrok connection > Properties.
Scroll down the little box to TCP/IP and double-click it.
Make sure obtain ip address automatically is selected.
Also worth making sure your firewall isn't blocking the connection. Run the network setup wizard (if you're using the XP firewall) and it should allow the connection through.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

To add to Richie's advice, when you converted from USB to ethernet did you power down the NTL modem i.e. remove the power lead and switch off your PC? Did you then connect the ethernet lead, remove the USB, power up the modem, wait two minutes then power up the PC?

firstly, thanks for advice.
I walked through step by step what you both instructed. I got a result. However (theres always one of these), my cable keeps flicking between 'enabled' and 'unplugged' and i keep getting pop ups telling me this about every 2 seconds. Is this a problem with the modem do you think? ive tried 2 different cables, both with the same results.
thanks again

The NTL modems are normally pretty reliable but it's always possible that is has a fault. I would be more inclined to think that the ethernet port in the PC is damaged or faulty. Is the port built into the motherboard or a PCI card plugged into a slot?

its a pci port/card. i have had problems with the modem in the past. it does seem to cut out for no apparent reason. eg if i leave it running all night i can get up to find it has just stopped working at some point and i have to reboot the computer.

I think it might be time for a new card. This will do the business.
