Are there "forum rules"...?
      #370899 - Sun Nov 04 2007 11:01 PM

I know that there are certain things that are against the rules e.g. posts about copyright infringement, and that people should use correct English rather than "text-speak", but are these set down in one place? If so, where, as I couldn't find them. If not, it might be an idea for someone to set the rules down and put them for everyone to see.
My reason for commenting about this is for the benefit of new members of the forum who could get up to speed quicker if they knew.
As an aside, I understnad the copyright rules for the forum, but is there anywhere (on the web, not just WebUser) where I could find a handy, easy to read summary of UK copyright laws especially for computer users, including for example the laws on ripping CDs (I was always under the impression that it was illegal, but you're unlikely to get prosecuted for it).

To get a full briefing on UK copyright law you would need a good lawyer but in general terms anything that has been created by someone and published in any form, including pictures, sound, writing etc. is copyrighted. That means you cannot copy it without the express permission of the copyright holder. It follows that ripping CDs is not allowed. But you also find that a lot of the copyright law is honoured more in the breach than the observance.

If you have a law it must be enforceable in some way. To actually stop people ripping CDs using the forces of law and order would be impossible so the manufacturers, for a while, tried to do it electronically but that was soon cracked. In a similar way they use electronic means to stop films being downloaded but that isn't working either. What they can do, however, is to concentrate their efforts on the people with huge collections of films and music on their computers and who make them available for sharing via P2P.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

Greysts thanks too, I can understand why people get confused!
