Every time I try to download Windows SP2 and updates I get the message 'windows virtual memory minimum too low' and runtime error warnings then my system crashes. I run windows XP home.

You might find this page worth a read. Right at the bottom there is a section about problems. Symantec's 'Norton' is specifically mentioned - is that your 'security system' by any chance?

Thanks for the quick response and advice (not that I understand that much about it). My security thingie is pc tools spyware doctor with anti virus. This problem only occured after i sent my laptop away to get the faulty hard drive replaced.

To your knowledge, did they do anything to the laptop at the time? When you got it back were all your programmes and data restored to there original condition or did you have to start from scratch?

Nothing was restored I had to start everything from scratch. That wasn't the first time the hard drive has been replaced! I have had this laptop for just over four years and in that time the hard drive has been replaced 6 times. Just as well I took out a cover plan.

Then I would say you've got a naff laptop and it's time to get a better one. 6 hard drives in 4 years is unbelievable unless you make a habit of dropping the laptop on the floor and kicking it around.
Are you using the Custom option for doing your Windows updates?

Yes it's custom updates. And I don't think the laptop is naff, it cost a lot of money, personally I think the replaced hard drives are naff is that possible?

The laptop may have cost a lot of money but if the manufacturer insists on installing hard disks that clearly are not fit for purpose, what other parts of the laptop are also of poor standard? A laptop hard disk should have a minimum life expectancy of 4 years or more, not 4 months.
Going back to your original problem, are you yet able to install the updates? How much RAM do you have in the laptop?

The lap top wasn't repaired by the manufacturer, it was repaired by a company called 'tech guys'which is used by the company I got my insurance from. I think these guys just fit any old **** cos it doesn't cost them anything.
Anyway back to the original subject: I think I've resolved it. After the pc crashed yet again I downloaded the updates and SP2 prior to reinstalling spyware doctor with antivirus and they downloaded like a dream. Any ideas why that should be? In the meantime I've downloaded AVG free.

Yes I have. Your security system probably wasn't happy with the 'two way' communication that Microsoft uses when doing updates. It was also probably trying to protect Windows system files from being changed and thus blocked the updates. SP2 in particular made some fundamental changes to the system. To solve the problem you may need to put Microsoft updates into a 'trusted' zone in your security setup, if such a thing is possible or perhaps lower the security level somewhat.
