Hi
i am attempting to fit a firewire pci card into my dads computer to allow him to retrieve footage from his Mini-Dv camcorder. After seeing there were empty PCI slots i purchased a pci card and opened the computer. However i have since discovered that the PCI card is too wide for the slot.
The electronic parts will fit into the socket on the inside no problem but it is the actual plate which should be visible from the outside (which has the firewire sockets on it) which is too big for the card slot. Is there a Mini-Pci or something??
it is a Dell Dimension C521 Desktop
Any advice on what i need and where i can purchase it from would be much appreciated

Do you mean the plate containing the firewire ports is too wide or too tall for the aperture? If so by how much? Are you sure you are using a PCI slot and not a PCI-e one?

hi, thanks for your quick response. the card is too tall. if inserted into the slot then it wouldn't be able to be fixed in and also one of the firewire sockets would be half covered by the edge of the slot, so would not fully be on display from the outside. i think they are PCI slots, the be honest i don't know what pci-e slots are, but on the back of the computer there are three empty slots, and all them are the same size as each other, but all too small.

I think we are confusing the aperture at the back of the PC with the slot inside the PC in which you insert the card. Have a look at this picture which shows PCI, PCIe1x and PCIe16x. Which type are you using for your card?

There is a clearly defined standard for PCI cards and slots to make sure that any PCI card will fit in any PCI slot and be the right size for the aperture. Is your PC what's known as a Small Form Factor (SFF) or is it a standard tower? What's the Dell model number?

That explains a lot. Have a look at this , particularly this bit Quote:
Both can accept only half-height expansion cards
I'm going out now but I'll have a scan round the net to see if I can find any for sale later on tonight.
