I was always under the impression that if you included words in inverted commas when doing a search, it was more thorough. ie "john smith + luton" it would identify anything connected with both. But when I use the inverted commas, I'm asked to remove them. Any suggestions please?

"John Smith" + "Luton" works perfectly in Google.
