3 PC Network
      #370176 - Tue Oct 30 2007 02:52 PM

I currently have two laptops and a desktop (all using Windows XP) on a wireless network using a LinkSys router and Virgin Media Broadband.

At the moment, when I find a good piece of software that i wish to install on all 3 computers, I find that it is taking a long time to install it on each PC on the network in turn. Is there any software that I could download or buy that will enable me to install settings/software across the network at once rather than each PC one after the other?

There is software to do it but be sensible, 3 PCs. How many pieces of software are you finding per day, 1?

Five to ten minutes to install on each PC - negligible!

If you had 200 machines to look after I could understand it, also I doubt that you find a program a day, perhaps 20-30 per year.

Thanks for the reply.

Well yes fair enough. But it's just all the settings and synchronising everthing bit by bit which seems pointless - 2 of the PC's I have work soooooo slow that it is painful to do again and again.

Anything which saves time would be useful.

When you install something for the first time and it isn't straightforward or it has a great number of options/settings, write it down so that you have a head start next time you install it.

If you're adamant you want to make life simpler (and more boring) Google will help you out. The old adage "You get what you pay for" is particularly relevant in this instance.

OK thanks.

But come to think of it, it's not just software that needs synchronising, it's files etc too.

I use my laptop at work and whatever files I create on that I'd like to be able to synchronise on the home network easily so I have a copy at home for when my laptop must stay at work. Is this possible?

What would I need to search for? Any recommendations?

Thanks for your help - much appreciated.

Sorry old chap, I learned a long time ago not to 'do' recommendations.

Incidentally, it will be more awkward if you’re running XP Home as opposed to XP Professional because Home doesn’t have the ‘Group Policy’ editor.

Microsoft's own Synctoy will synchronise files in 2 folders for you, but as stated above, it's a bit limited but that's what you get with freebies.
