Hi, Vista freezes whenever I try and connect my cable modem, cannot get into task manager or anything, its just totally froze, only had the laptop a few weeks, last time I tried it it worked fine and I haven't touched it for a week or so. Have to unclip battery and remove power to be able to reboot, will not boot without freezing when cable modem is attached. Any ideas?
EDIT: Just to add, connecting through USB port, have just tried ethernet and seems to be doing the same!!!!????
(Starting to think this vista was a very bad decision.)

If you can get the laptop running for a few minutes, a Vista update was re-released the other day. It may help, make sure you get the correct one; 32 bit or 64 bit, http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=941649

If you're connecting via USB, remove it and uninstall the modem software.
Then connect the ethernet cable to the network port, open your browser and away you go.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

Update: I had installed PC Tools Firewall after failing to find another compatible with Vista, looking in device manager PC Tools had installed separate drivers for all devices for some reason, couldn't un-install the drivers but removing PC Tools Firewall seems to have done the trick. I now have no problems but am relying on Vista's built in firewall !!

Thanks for that mate, I had the same problem with my nextdoor neighbours new vista laptop, it was not "operating" as good as my vista machine even though it had the same programs etc on. It has stumped me for a couple of weeks now!
After reading your post about PC Tools Firewall, it would appear that this was causing all of their problems! I have uninstalled PC Tools and installed Zone Alarm (thanks bobnemesis) and all of the little issues like Windows Mail not opening on top of the browser, random freezes at start up, tabs not opening on top etc are all solved
It is strange that I have PC Tools firewall on my Vista Laptop and it runs fine but it wont work properly on my neighbours! All I can guess is it is spec related! My laptop cost £1300 as oppose to my neighbours £400!
Anyway great post and I am sure people will come across this until PC Tools is fully Vista compatible! Avoid PC Tools people and download Zone Alarm
