Hiya,
I hope that someone somewhere can help me with my laptop.
My darling baby son dropped a cordless phone smack bang onto the keys. It seemed okay, but then a blue screen popped up saying that if this was the first time we were seeing it to shut it down, so we did.
When we rebooted it, it came on but within a minute was shutting down, again with the same message screen. It said to follow the the instructions about removing newly loaded stuff but there was nothing new on it!
After that it just wouldn't load at all. Came up the message saying that no OS was found.
My other half has taken into work and run the diagnostic tree but that came up with everything as fine.
We have tried to run the reboot disc but that didn't seem to do anything, maybe we didn't do something? But it just didn't run.
Can anyone help??? Getting laptop withdrawal symtoms LOL!!!
Thanks A xx

No OS found can indicate a HDD error but more information is needed as follows :-
1. What are the ‘tree’ diagnostics that have been run? 2. What is the reboot disk you tried, is it labelled, does Windows boot from it?

Hiya,
Thanks for replying.
We have run all the diagnostic tree, every last bit of it! And the CD, well we have 2, one is for the roxio cd burning thingy that came pre loaded on the machine and the other just states its a recovery disk.
It now shows an additional message... PXE/ E61 MEDIA TEST FAILURE
...which sounds deathly to me.
I have googled it but its all techno babble to me, something about the harddrive. Which i know is the brain of the machine but does that mean its recoverable or is headed for the micro chips in the sky?!
Grrrrr, that Son of mine. I love him but he's grounded for ever! And pocket money- forget it LOL!!!
Thanks A xx

You haven't really answered my two previous questions but never mind. It sounds to me as though 'something' has come loose or been damaged.
Before trying to run anything, try looking at the easily removed components.
Take the battery out before removing anything. Obviously, I don't know your level of technical competence so I'm suggesting you make a note of what came from where. Without too much trouble, you will be able to remove the hard disk and inspect the pins, case, etc. You should also be able to look at some/all of the memory (RAM).
If it‘s not the HDD or memory, you will have to remove the keyboard and screen to get at the innards. Google will help you here.
Good luck.

Sorry, i was at work earlier and was trying to work and beg for help all at the same time!
The tree thing is something we found in F12 boot menu. There is a fancy looking windows appearing thing when we have the recovery disc in and that one came up fine. There is also a Dos looking one with out the Disk in and that pings up an error with the harddrive- basically says it cant find it.
The recovery disk we have is a driver disk, we cant find the original Windows disk, i think i may have misplaced it when we moved a couple of months back. It took me a couple of hours to find what we have I can find the one for the tower PC we have but they are different makes so the disks wont work will they?
My other half has it downstairs having a little look under the keyboard. He is having a look see if there is anything loose. Its safe with him as he is far more "fiddly" than me.
I have phoned a local PC repair shop, and the guy said the HDD is goosed and says he'll replace and re- install windows for £100. I dont know if thats good or bad but at least it's something to fall back on.
Luckily we didn't have anything stored on the laptop. But it has made me think that i have quite alot on this and i would hate to loose it, so if anyone can point me in the right direction for a crash course in backing up my files that would be most appreciated
Thanks again A xx

When you first switch on the laptop do you get a BIOS screen that allows you to go into Setup by pressing F2? If you do, try it and from with the resultant menu should be able to find information about hardware and your hard disk. If the BIOS can't actually see the hard disk then your local shopkeeper may be right.
