Hello one and all. I have finally succumbed to my urges to go on the internet via broadband. I am a total net virgin apart from the odd play at work. So I am completely clueless. I have taken up this offer from Carphone Warehouse because of the free laptop http://shop.carphonewarehouse.com/aol_eligibility.php but I also have a pc at home which can go on the internet via a ethernet cable. I have been asking a few workmates how to set it up and they all say do not install any software that comes with it. Apparently I can just connect the laptop to it without installing anything because the laptop will just pick up the internet connecton I just have to put in a wep key which will be on the router (I dont even know the router name/make or where to look for the key. I can do the same on the PC apparently but they all went very vague when I puhed them for a more detailed explanation. I would rather learn how to do this my self so any help would be appreciated,
Thanks in advance.
PS sorry for the long winded explanation.

The first thing to do is to send a PM to a moderator and change your name to something with a more confident ring about it, then :
1. Plug the desktop computer into the router using the Ethernet cable. 2. Open a browser window and type a 192.168.n.n address into the address bar, depending upon the make of router (look on the underside), then to access it, type the user name and password as per this list :- Belkin 192.168.2.1 BT Home Hub 192.168.1.254 (or bthomehub.home) admin admin BT Voyager 2091 or 2500v 192.168.1.1 (or voyager.home) admin admin 3Com 192.168.1.1 admin admin D-Link 192.168.0.1 admin Linksys 192.168.1.1 admin admin Microsoft Broadband 192.168.2.1 admin admin 3. You should now have access to the router set-up. Look for a section named wireless and make a note of the SSID Name and WEP/WPA key. These two pieces of information are needed for you to connect wirelessly to the router. 4. Also look for a section named ISP, Internet or similar wording and key in your ISP details, i.e. the user name and password allocated by your ISP. This should now allow you (the router/modem) to connect to the internet.

Thanks for the reply. It all seems a bit foreign to me. So just to clarify. I do not need to put any of the software that comes with the router on my laptop/pc? I just need to connect it using the method above?

Correct.
If you can't follow my abbreviated instructions go to Google. Find out the manufacturer of your router and search on "Installing an XYZ 123 router". You will get plenty of hits.
Good luck.

As you are signing up to AOL they'll be sending Out a Netgear DG834G and it is easy to set up ( I converted to wireless this week) And here are 3 things you Must download off AOL 1st Firewall. AOL provides a copy of MacAfee Personal Firewall Free to members. Type Keyword Firewall to get the Link and Its an "install and forget" unless it asks ( via Slide in Popup).A No brainer TIP Pressing the Control key and the "K" key together will bring up the Keyword box if you are on the AOL homepage Item is also on the Top frame of the window
2nd and 3rd Downloads are for the drivers for both The AOL Broadband and Routers
You do not need them. But they can be Used instead of the Disks in the Boxes just run them and they'll work
Got to Keyword Drivers and the Setup Driver for AOL Is easy to locate as for the route scroll down the page and there are a selection of Different Routers and the Model numbers (picture oftem too Look beneath the router for the Model number Just click the link to start the Download and use the "Save" option( NOTE Always gives an option to install after the Download has finished
The Drivers are 7/8 MBs each and the Firewall is only about 3 MB
NOTE: May be able to use the Router Driver on its own?
Best TIP when installing Broadband Do Take your time with the Filters and the Leaflet is helpful but trial and error does pay dividends (I listen in on the Line) To see if its clear of Noise(hissing or Modem type sounds Bad on the ear. and DO not put a filter into the Master socket Blanks the line!
Lots of other House-Keeping Jobs as well See the Security Forum for what to do as regards protection. Locked posting
PS A Used computer often Has 99% of these in place before you start
But a New computer has to be Primed and for a Newbie that's a very Big Hill! If you do get stuck post and we'll put you right

Now I am confused. I do have to use the software that comes with the router?

Switch on and start tapping your set up key.
If you don't know what it is, alternately tap Del, F1 and F2 as these are the most frequently used. In the BIOS look in each of the sections for 'On-board LAN' or similar wording and toggle it to 'Enabled', save the settings and exit.

Firstly can I offer my sincere thanks to BurrWalnut and BedstorfromAP for all the help you have given me. I am actually sat at HOME typing this on my own PC because of you guys. The frustration was unbareable yesterday because of the card being turned off and without access to the internet at home I have had to go to town and jump in the local cyber cafe and check this thread. So I printed off the BIOS info BurrWalnut provided and heypresto I am live. The next challenge is my wireless laptop which is coming in a few weeks time. But I feel a hell of a lot more onfident after all this. So once again thank you guys for all your help.

Well done! Now's the time to change your name as I suggested in an earlier post.
