Hope somebody’s heard of this… we’ve recently moved from a cabled area into non-cabled, so got BT to reactivate the phone line and asked Tiscali to supply broadband. They’ve refused, saying there’s a previous broadband connection still active, and to phone BT. Phoned BT, who were rude and breathtakingly unhelpful as usual – they say the previous occupant’s broadband is still active till the end of the month, so they won’t do anything till then – and EVEN THEN it will take them 7-10 days to remove the “tag” or whatever it’s called, so that we can have broadband! And they won’t even tell us who the existing ISP is. So we’re stuck without broadband for a month. Is there anything we can do about this?
Thanks a lot…

I'm afraid it sounds like dial-up for you.
The only long shot is if the previous occupier gave you his/her ISP details - highly unlikely!

So… although it’s my house, I’m paying for the phone line, somebody else has the right to prevent me using it? Sounds cr4p to me. Nobody should have the right to do that!

You have my sympathy.
Here is a scenario for you to get your brain around:- 1. Imagine that you have a router that isn't locked to a specific ISP. 2. Imagine that you have a wireless laptop or wi-fi adapter for a desktop PC.
Having one or both of the above ask yourself "Is it possible to use the internet where I live?".

Ummm... thanks for trying to help, but sadly you've merely highlighted my ignorance.
1. I didn’t know routers could be “locked”…
2. Yes, I’ve got a wireless card and router I can use… but I assume, to access the ADSL connection, I need a username and password for the relevant ISP, n’est-ce pas? Oh, and I’ve just discovered, after threatening BT with weapons of mass destruction, that the “locked” previous ISP is AOL. Not that that probably helps.
