hi
i'm planning to invest in vista ultimate, trouble is I'm not sure whether I should go for the 32 or 64 bit version.
My system is: Dell 5150 Inspiron, Pentium 4 640 with HT Tech. 3.2 Ghz (supports 64 bit OS), 3 Gb RAM, 256mb ATI Radeon X600 Graphics card.
Is it advisable to go for the 64 bit version over the 32? I want to have as much longevity as possible. I generally use the pc for gaming and multi-media etc.
Will I need drivers for everything before I do a clean install, especially with the 64 bit.
I'm not sure about the clean install process generally as I've never done it before......is it easier to clean install the 32 over the 64?
Thanks for any help you can give me!
Best regards.

I would suggest you go for the safer option of the 32 bit version.
Plug in all your hardware, e.g. printer, scanner, cam, etc. then download and run the Vista Upgrade Advisor from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx
This will tell you what software and hardware will or won't work.
It's always best to clean install rather than upgrade.
Lastly, make sure you have off-line copies of all your personal data, e.g. pics, music, videos and the like before installing.

Good advice from BurrWalnut about 32 bit being safer but 64bit is the future and is far better for gaming. I have XPx64 and I find it far more stable than the 32bit. BurrWalnuts advice re your hardware being compatible with 64bit is a fair point but most drivers can be downloaded with no trouble. For what its worth, with your system, Id plump for 64bit.

If you click on the link BurrWalnut gave you and run the Advisor it will give you all the info you need. You may need 64 bit drivers for your printer, scanner etc but these are no problem downloading from the manufactures, ( Epson,Lexmark Etc) I run Xp Home on one machine, Vista home premium on a laptop and XP ProX64 on another. By far, in my opinion, the 64 bit is lights ahead. Hope that helps and if you need any advice on anything just let me know.

sorry i stumbled across this post and am intrigued! I thought that 64 bit and 32 bit was all down to hardware and there was no chose over how many bits you could run. Over the last year I have updated various bits(as in parts!) of my desktop i am resisting the urge to go to vista just yet I would need to upgrade my video card and that now means motherboard I'm on all my old one can manage but could I go up to 64bit xp? Is it worth it? What would I need to check? For the record i currently have a pentium 4 3.07ghz and 1.49gb ram memory, a radion 9250 graphics card.
