I've just gone wireless and this is how I did it...
      #369360 - Tue Oct 23 2007 12:20 AM

I've read with interest quite a few postings with the same thing about installing a router and setting up a secure wireless link to a computer

Well I have done it Both Jobs and 1 was on a brand new computer and I have never done it before.

And Whats hard about it? I first ran a set up disk for the Belkin wireless card then installed the card 10 minutes work on the Old computer

on the New Machine I attached the Router, ran the AOL router installation disk ,inputted the WEP Password and Network Name got a long 24 character ID number says there is also a 20 character version

Copied that and the other log details (20minutes)

Switched on before Logging on an the router box is lit up like a xmas tree..
Computer goes throught the POST test No messages...carry on ...Desktop appears and ..yes the icons saying the Hardware is installed ect is seen

But I thought before I log onto AOL I must open Internet explorer to do a small adjustment

And MSNs Home page comes up complete with the Latest News
and I'm not logged on!!

and I experimented a bit and found I could get to all my usual sites and still Not logged on only thing was they were slow to load Mind you There were no History or Temp files yet to assist with the display

Next I logged onto AOL and It logged in first time, but locked up (empty cache again)Later...Better now thanks
and I spent a few hour downloading My essential Programs and Istallin them Getting 115 to 125 Kbs Speed Download Average over the 100MBS cable connection Had No stops or dropouts

And the good thing is you can Get the MS securitys updated after you have shut down Had about 25 (almost an Hour) shuts down when they have been downloaded and Installed...

NOTE Don't get most of these luxuries if you are on the 54MB wireless link OK?

Next the computer being connected to wirelessly Has the Card and wireless install Has no RJ45 scocket so I cannot wire it up to the Router and B) I have no room to set up Both comuter in this tiny room So I thought Why not connect the router to the Phone line , and just wire the computer to the monitor sund systen ect. and see if it picks up a signal then run the 2 computer together later to fine tune the connection

So I did that and thought Won't work May need a reinstall of AOL too?

And...It logged on with no Hesitation!!

OH the Belkin Network program asks for the 24 character password (saved earlier)and a Custom Name for the Network branch and in the Belkin Program page the Router was displaying complete with name

1 issue the Windows XP Wireless Networking Page (Known as Zero Config) is not easy to navigate and seem unable to work:( Whereas the Belkin version is quite easy to understand and set up
But there does Not seem to be any downloads for this Nothing on Belkins site

Question Will it work with Non Belkin setups?

As of time of posting this I have remained on the slave computer all night (which I have been using while building the New computer and its not missed a beat

Oh Time taken to connect the slave and get online 1 minute perhaps 2

PS My BT Voyager BB Modem is going to be consigned to the spares box

Well done!

You should write a book "How I installed a wireless router in 650 words when I could have written it in 50 with correct grammar and pronunciation" or "From time to time I can be ungrammatically boring".

Forgot to check it with my email spell-check which is supposed also to correct grammatical errors too.
Only thing it does in practice is incorrectly call out missing Brackets And most of the features are turned on too

Would be nice to see a functional editor (with these features) added to these forums on a future Forum software upgrade.

Meanwhile my new computer has Started a bout of Stop erroritis ,and the wireless link is locking up. Suspect the Error stop on all errors is still "on" in the BIOS Couple of minutes to find and correct. Why this switch is not in the Windows Services (Admin Tools)menu has puzzled me for years, and it is an often posted issue on Forums.
My Mate installed Windows, and if I remember correctly there is NO option in the install routine to switch this off, or a pointer to it.
And it always manifests itself after 1 or 2 startups ,on a good install (on a clean system.Immediately if its an install on a used machine!

Hi Chris
I agree with you 100% Belkin routers are nothing like the quality of the Netgear models. They do make good wireless cards though, also Belkin cables are also excellent value Which is my hardware setup BTW

Update on my setup. Have solved the Mystery of the Bad dropouts. It was due to the Nvidia Firewall and graphics drivers fighting against the Windows Firewall
Solution... Uninstall both the Nvidia graphic drivers and Nvidia firewall then install MacAfee Personal firewall (or Security Suite) plus the latest NVIDIA Forceware 163.71 WHQL drivers
And when I tried it the Crashes and Drop outs were no more

Took me over 8 hours poring over Booklets and Trying different setups now I have a better than 95% Stable Link Before this I guess about less than 20% reliability .But Determination has rewarded me eventually
