I have just set up a WiFi connection with thanks to Greysts.
I have been trying to set up a home network without much success.
I have NTL - Virgin Broadband, running from cable via Ntl Modem and Belkin blue router, hard wired to Desktop running Windows XP Pro. Also new Acer Extensa 5620 running Vista Home Premium WiFi.
Both are Ok Desktop on hardwired and Laptop on WiFi, but I am unable to get the 2 to talk to each other. I'm sure it's just the setting that are wrong but am unable to figure them out.
Any help will be gratefully accepted and appreciated.

Do you have firewalls on either of the PC's? If so make sure that they are allowing access to each other. You also should change the Workgroup name on each PC and then set up a shared folder on each PC. If you need to know how to do that come back to us.

Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

First step is to change the Workgroup name. Right click on My Computer (Computer in Vista) and choose Properties. Make a note of the computer names (write them down somewhere) and then change the workgroup name on both PCs to something meaningful to you. Use a maximum of 8 characters and use only letters or numbers. Again write it down. Now reboot both PCs.
Next right click on Start and choose Explore. Locate a folder (or create a new one) in My Documents (Documents in Vista), right click and choose Sharing and Security in XP. Then choose Share this folder on the Network. I haven't got my Vista machine powered up but it should be similar in Vista. Follow the instructions and then exit.
You should now be able to look at My Network Places in XP and find the shared folder on the Vista PC.
You may still have problems with your firewall but we'll deal with that after you've done the first bit.

Hi Done as your previous mail.
Just to check - Workgroup = Same names. Folders = different names.
I have carried out the Folder options on the desktop OK.
I have opened up the Vista on the Laptop and carried out your instructions, it looks for the folder and can't find anything.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.

It's got to be a firewall problem. You need to give permission to both PCs to access each other via the firewall. Try giving permission to a range of IP addresses, say 192.168.0.1 through to 192.168.5.5 in your firewall setup. Before you do so, have a look at the firewall security log and see if it's blocking communications for any IP addresses in that range.

Hi
Looks like 100's of them with the number 192.168.2.2 This is in Zone Alarm.
How do I alter it? How do I check this in Vista as the firewall in microsoft.
Sorry but it's a bit beyond me when playing with something I don't know.
Regards

I've just copied these instructions that RichieP wrote from another thread.
Open Zone Alarm firewall.
Click Firewall on the left side, then the Zones tab on the right.
Click on the Add button, then ip range.
Enter the starting ip address with the lowest number of your addresses, eg 192.168.1.1
Enter the second as the highest in your network, eg 192.168.1.6
Give it a name, eg network.
Click OK, then Apply.
Now try again.
