Erasing a hard disk
      #368497 - Mon Oct 15 2007 12:26 PM

Hi, I have an old but fully working computer which I wish to give to a deserving child, but it not connected to the internet so I cannot download and use the complete erasing program.
I have gone through add/remove programs but with limited success, is there any other way of completely clearing the hard disk.

A couple of questions first. Is it likely that the person you are giving it to will have enough knowledge to seek out what ever was on the hard disk before? (It's not that difficult to do!)

Do you want to wipe the hard disk completely? If you do you will need to have the operating system available on CD so you can re-install it before handing it over.

If we find the right piece of software for you can you download it on another PC, copy it to a CD and then run it on the one you want to give away?

Hi, Thanks for the quick reply.
I have the disc to reinstall the OS so the complete erase will be OK or I can just erase personal info, photos, business letters etc if this would be easier, and successful.

You can just delete your personal stuff but it would be very easy to recover it. I would be inclined to reboot the PC with your OS CD in the drive. You should be then able to follow the prompts to remove all the existing partitions, create a brand new one and install Windows.

Thanks, I have done as suggested, and everything has been deleted.
Your advice is mush appreciated, this is the second time you have helped me.

You're welcome. Might be third time lucky soon.
