1. Why are you running in safe mode?

2. If you are running in safe mode to correct the desktop and taskbar problem, there is no need. Go here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll down to line 195 on the right hand column and download the file. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt.

1. Why was I trying to run in safe mode? To try to remove remnants of an old programme that will not otherwise delete.(Norton advised me to do this in Safe Mode)
2. With a normal start up all is fine.Absolutely no problem.
3. With a start up in Safe Mode.... I do not get the basic icons that I used to. i.e My Computer/Rubbish Bin etc and there is no Start button bottom left on the task bar. All is blank......just safe mode in the four corners of the screen.
I can only call up the Task Manager via Ctrl/Alt/Delete...Via this I can defrag the HD.....Command line prompts is therefore working.
This is on my home pc...on my notebook I get the icons and the start button in Safe Mode. For some reason they are not there anymore on my home pc.
Hope it's clear now.
Thanks again.

I can't answer the safe mode problem other than the registry fix I identified above.

If it’s Norton you’re trying to remove, download the correct version for Norton 2003 onwards, here http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsg...lg=en&ct=us Don’t forget to stop Norton from running before trying to uninstall it.

If a program needs to be permanently stopped before being uninstalled, go to Start > Run, type regedit and press Enter. Expand the tree on the left and, in turn, look at these registry keys (they may not all exist)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft \Windows\Current Version\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft \Windows\Current Version\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft \Windows\Current Version\RunOnceEx
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft \Windows\Current Version\RunEx

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunEx

Create a system restore point first in case you have ‘finger’ problems. In the right hand pane, right-click the name of the entry, select delete, confirm the deletion. Exit regedit and restart the computer.

To remove a program that stubbornly refuses to be uninstalled via Add/Remove programs, try these :
1. Install it again, then uninstall it. This sometimes works.
2. Download an update to the program and apply it. Sometimes an update will detect the previous version and offer to remove it.
3. Download NirSoft's MyUninstaller, here http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/myuninst.html

Thanks Burr Walnut !
Problem has also surfaced in normal startup mode.
I had an explorer.exe crash with ntdll.dll error. A full anti-virus scan and spyware scan finds nothing amiss. (Now all is working fine again in normal start up).(Norton.Symantic is almost all removed .. and I've changed over to AVG..see log below)
In Safe Mode I still have no Start Button or taskbar or Icons. I can call up Task Manager with Ctrl/Alt/Delete. If I run explorer.exe in Task Manager I get the error 'Windows cannot trace file /path etc'. However other command prompts (defrag/disk clean up etc) work. I am logged on as Administrator.
As I can't fathom it out...I've done a Hijack this scan..Unfortunately I am not technical enough to identify any error...maybe you ... or some other kind person on this forum can help? Thanks again. NB Maybe a Repair Install is an alternative but as the problem is not (yet?) urgent I see this as a last resort !!
Here's the log:

I can tell you that you've got a vast array of stuff running at startup that is probably causing your PC to run extremely slowly. I presume you are using PeerGuardian because you use are using file sharing sites. Registry First Aid is a non essential process and Incredimail can also cause problems. I would look through the 04 entries are ask yourself 'Do I really need that running in the background?'. You might also look at the 023 Service entries and confirm that you really need them.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

Thanks Greysts !
I'll go through the O4 and 023 entries. I don't use Peer Guardian anymore (I'm reformed) so that can definately go !

NB As for becoming Queen I wish you success.... there are enough of them here and I have no immediate desire to the throne!!! LOL
Thanks again.
