Good afternoon. I have two wireless enabled laptops, a printer and a wireless router that I use to connect to the internet. What I want to do is connect one laptop, running XP to the printer (this laptop already has this printer installed on it and is connected via a usb printer cable) and use it to enable me to print from the other laptop (upstairs) running XP Pro. Is this possible? I don't want to have to buy a wireless printer adapter for the printer so thought I could send the things to be printed via the other laptop. Taking the laptop down (I am doing this at the moment and it is a pain) or the printer upstairs isn't really an option . I could email it to the other laptop or use a usb memory stick, but it would be so much easier, not to mention more fun if I could just send the file to be printed to the printer via the other laptop. If indeed it is possible any suggestions as to what to do to set it up would be appriciated. Thank you very much.

It's a simple process, here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/maintain/printers.mspx

It says that the printer connected to the printer that you will print through must be turned on for the system to work. Do this mean that you have to be logged on etc and that it cannot be hibernating or on standby?

I think you mean the computer that has the printer must be switched on, which is correct unless you use a wireless print server.

Ok, so I followed the instructions and I got as far as stage 6 in the "connect to the shared printer" section and the printer didn't show up in the add printer wizard on the computer I want to connect to the printer. "microsoft windows network" shows up in the box but there is nothing listed below it. Any suggestions? Thank you.

The most common reason for that is the fact that a firewall is stopping access to the printer. Do you have a firewall running on the host PC?

The host pc as in the pc connected to the printer? Sorry if that is a stupid question Yes, there is a firewall on both pcs.
I have had a check and the pc connected to the printer is using windows security center firewall and the other pc is using norton.

Yes, the host is the one with the printer. It's probably Norton that's the problem. Have a look at the Norton firewall log and see what's being blocked.
