Desktop Disappears

My desktop disappears whenever I click on a hard disk drive icon in My Computer.

So far the desktop always recovers but what is causing it? My Computer won't allow me to access my drives.

Can anyone help me with this peculiar problem?

Does a warning pop-up when you try to access your drives?
