You haven't given us a lot to go on, e.g. specific program or activity playing up!
Have you installed all the available updates?
If not, that's a good place to start.
If you have installed them, try the system file checker: Click Start > All Programs > Accessories and right-click Command Prompt, then ‘Run as Administrator’. Type sfc /scannow (note the space) and press Enter. This may take some time and you may have to put the Vista DVD in the drive. You can analyse the SFC log file, here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228/en-us

Thanks for your time,
im afraid there wasn't a lot more i could say. It locks up totally random. Sometimes when im playing games sometimes surfing sometimes doing nothing. It locked up trying to write this twice. . .
anyway i did as you suggested. ran the system file checker. it did its thing and fixed some files but said it couldn't fix them all? To be honest the log file went well over my head and the site you suggested didnt help much.
as im writing this, for the third time, i have disabled all of vistas eye candy, eg aero after thinking that might be the problem and it hasn't frozen for 30 mins (crosses fingers)
so any other ideas? im in your debt
thanks for your time

A few more questions, I'm afraid. In no particular sequence, just as I think of them :
1. Is this a new PC (or laptop) or one upgraded from XP to Vista? 2. Are you using one of the standard Vista wallpapers? 3. How long has it been going on for? 4. Have you had problems installing any hardware, e.g. is Device Manager 'clean'? 5. The question I asked before, are you up to date with Vista downloads? 6. Does this happen when the machine has been on for quite some time?

again thanks for your time.
1. this machine is nearly 3 weeks old. pre-installed with vista. 2. No, i use my own wallpaper. specially sized for wide-screen monitor. (would the high screen resolution be a problem? its 1440x900. 3. its been going on since i got it but has been getting worse as i ad more stuff. 4. no probs installing hardware. all installs have been clean up to now 5. no it can happen at any time.
and since i disabled aero no lock ups since. has been about an hour and half. But id love to solve the problem as i loved the look of aero.
thanks again

To be honest old chap, I'd take or send it back or, at the very least, contact the supplier. It's three weeks old and it may take ages to get it working to your satisfaction.
However, I get the impression you don't want to do that, so try a few things before succumbing to the inevitable :-
1. Use Aero Glass with a standard Vista wallpaper and monitor the freezing. 2. If 1 above still freezes try a lower screen size, say, 1280 x 800. 3. Try other ‘default’ settings that you may have changed. 4. As it’s only three weeks old, perhaps you could go back to an earlier point via system restore, or even reset it to factory settings.
Finally, for the third time of asking “Have you downloaded all the Vista fixes from Microsoft“?

no more freezes it seems after turning of aero. now i can concentrate on finding out why.

Just a quick update.
I had to do a full fresh boot from the recovery cd's because all that switching off with the power button really did more damage. Everything was fine for a few days but then it started freezing again. After a bit of digging i read in a random forum somewhere ( its laughable there are so many websites relating to vista problems already ) that my mouse could be a pproblem. im using a logitech Click Plus . So ive updated to the vista drivers and had a full day and night with no probs.
My new vista motto 'slowly but surely' thanks
