acquiring address/fail to renew IP
      #367681 - Tue Oct 09 2007 12:11 AM

My computer has been connected to the internet with wireless for over a month. There are two other computers in the house that are connected the same way and are running fine. Today I kept receiving one of two errors. The first one is acquiring network and then it failed to connect. If I click the repair button it will say failure to connect because it fails to renew the IP.

I searched several networking blogs/communities and did all of their troubleshooting tips.

Ive made sure that the DHCP and tcp/ip were connected. I did run, cmd and ping 127.0.0.1. I ipconfig/flushdns.I made sure windows zero config wasn't running. I reinstalled the drivers. I have checked for spyware/viruses. I also restored my computer to a different date.

When I ran AVG two "changes" showed up. When I clicked for more detail all it showed were the file names. [kernel3d.dll, hosts]

Also, when I was trying to ipconfig/refresh it said "media state media disconnected. "

Is there anything else I should try doing before I call someone to come fix it? I use XP and use netgear if that info is needed.

Thanks

.

Sometimes with Netgear if you cannot acquire an IP address or you get 169.254.n.n when typing ipconfig /all, try typing the WEP/WPA key in hexadecimal rather than as ASCII characters.

Changing the channel sometimes works as well.

Hi

Tend to agree with the last poster. Sounds a bit like the wep key may be corrupt. Worth removing this connection from your list of preferred networks (in my network places) and re-adding it. I have seen a virus which can cause this error by replacing tcpip.sys, thus stopping you receiving a valid ip. If this is the issue, you'll need to copy a working version of tcpip.sys onto a memory stick from another computer (c:\windows\system32\drivers)and replace the version on the same folder in this computer.
