No wireless internet connection...please help!!
      #367423 - Fri Oct 05 2007 08:50 PM

Ok...here goes...
I have Virgin Broadband on my Vista desk-top.
I have bought a lap-top with vista also and a Belkin wireless G Plus MIMO router.
I set up the router through my desk-top using the cd set-up wizard.
The lap-top wireless connection is good, but, there is no internet on either the desk-top or the lap-top.
The trouble-shooter said my connection properties may be wrong, I have tried every option available...still nothing...I have even cloned the router to my WanMac address...whatever that is???
Help Please!!!!

You shouldn't need to use the CD to get everything working. I assume you have connected the Virgin Media modem to your router using an ethernet cable? You should then connect your router to your PC with another ethernet cable. You then need to power down everything (modem, router & PC) by removing the power leads. Fire up the VM box and wait two minutes for the lights to settle down. Then power up the router and wait again. Finally power on the PC. Now see if you can connect to the net.

Next connect the laptop via ethernet cable and go into the router setup page. Change the SSID and the administrator password then setup wireless security using WPA2. Install the same security on the laptop and make sure you can connect via wireless. Then remove the ethernet cable between the router and the laptop.

Thank you for offering your assistance!
I have tried again but still there is no internet access to the pc!
I clicked on 'Network Diagnostics' and this is what it said...'Windows cannot find the host name "www.mywebsearch.com" using DNS. The Domain Name Server may be down.'
I apologise if Im being a real thicko!!
Do you have any more suggestion??
Thanks again

You have spyware on your PC and who knows what else. Have a look at this. Before worrying about the router you need to read these instructions and then post your own log in the the HJT thread. We'll deal with the routher after you have a clean PC.

Don't try and do it yourself, use my link to the HJT thread and get our experts to help you. If you've got MyWebSearch you may well have other stuff as well and the only way to find out is to use HJT. As to how you got it, Norton only looks for viruses. This isn't a virus it's spyware.

Hi

Go onto the router (192.168.2.1 normally)and make sure your Belkin is set to PPPoA, NOT PPPoE. As default Belkins are often set to the oE setting. Also VCPI should be 0,38. Worth checking on the router whether you've got an up/down speed. Even if you're not on the net, this should be displayed on the status page. Normally downspeed is between 512 and 8192 and up is between 256 and 512.
