...I have a telephone socket in my dining room but want my PC in the living room.
I do not want wires and have had a telephone guy down to have a look at moving the telephone socket. Can't do this without wires everywhere. He suggested a wireless connection and the impression I got would be a modem in the dining room and then my desktop in the living room.
Can this be done because all the modems I am looking at need to be connected to the PC and then laptops can be run wirelessly form there.
I want my desktop to be the wireless one!

You will need a wireless router with an ADSL modem built in unless your modem has a LAN, (not USB) output. and a PCI (fitted in the computer) or USB wireless device for your desktop, assuming it doesn't have one.
If you're changing ISP and sign up for a year, you might get a wireless router for free.
Get a reputable make like Netgear/DLink. I have BT and Belkin kit that's been fine for me, but some frown at these - clearly not fashionable.
You'll need your Broadband user id/password, and initially, to set up you'll need a wired connection between the LAN socket on your computer and the router to get going. Buy the same make of router and wireless card to minimise start up problems. different makes will work together but their instructions differ.
Try and read up what you can on the 'net - Microsoft's turorials aren't bad, and do follow the instructions that comes with your kit
